Six Family Members Killed in Tragic Road Accident in Gombe, Nigeria

A devastating road accident along the Gombe-Azare highway in Nigeria has claimed the lives of six members of the same family. The Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander Felix Thelman reported that the crash, which involved a head-on collision with two other vehicles, was caused by a burst tire and over-speeding.

The victims were family members of Maidalan Gombe Alhaji Ahmad Shehu, a prominent traditional title holder in the Gombe Emirate. They included Shehu's daughter Zainab, her son Ahmad, Ahmad Muhammad, Na'ima Muhammad (children of Shehu's brother Muhammad D.O.), and two others. Two people were injured in the accident, while the six deceased comprised two adult males, three adult females, and one male child.

The crash occurred near Misau Local Government Area as the family was returning from Azare town. The injured and deceased were taken to the General Hospital in Misau. Funeral prayers for the departed were conducted at the Gombe Emir's Palace, attended by the Emir of Gombe, Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, and thousands of sympathizers.

Why this matters: This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for improved road safety measures and infrastructure in Nigeria. Road accidents are a major cause of preventable deaths in the country, and addressing this issue requires concerted efforts from the government, road safety authorities, and the public to enforce traffic regulations, maintain road conditions, and promote safe driving practices.

Governor Yahaya expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved Maidalan Gombe family, describing the loss as devastating. "The entire Gombe community is deeply affected by this sad event, and the loss of six family members in the tragic auto accident is a profound loss not only to the family but also to the entire Gombe people ," said Ismaila Uba Misilli, the Director-General (Press Affairs) to Government House Gombe. The remains of the deceased were laid to rest at the Gombe Central Cemetery.
