Pakistan and UK Hold Regional Stabilization Conference in Islamabad

Islamabad, Pakistan - The 6th Pakistan-UK Regional Stabilization Conference was held at the National Defence University in Islamabad on April 30, 2024. The conference, a flagship defense and security dialogue between the two countries, brought together experts from various domains to discuss global and regional security issues.

The opening session was addressed by Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir and the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) of the UK Army, General Sir Patrick Sanders. A 30-member UK delegation, led by Major General Tom Bateman, Standing Joint Force Commander, is visiting Pakistan from April 29 to May 3 for the conference.

During the conference, the delegations from both sides exchanged perspectives on the global and regional environment and its impact on national security, regional peace, and stability. This year, the scope of the discussion has been expanded from bilateral to regional issues, with defense officials from the region also participating.

Why this matters: The Pakistan-UK Regional Stabilization Conference serves as an important platform for strategic dialogue and exchange of ideas between the two countries. It reaffirms the commitment of Pakistan and the UK to promoting regional stability and security cooperation in an increasingly complex global environment.

Separately, COAS General Munir met with CGS General Sanders and the designate CGS of the UK Army, General Roland Walker. They discussed matters of professional interest and measures to further elevate bilateral defense relations between Pakistan and the UK.

The 6th Pakistan-UK Regional Stabilization Conference concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening defense ties and working together to address regional security challenges. "The conference provided an excellent opportunity to exchange views on the regional security situation and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation," said a senior Pakistani military official. The UK delegation expressed appreciation for Pakistan's efforts in promoting regional peace and stability.
