Bago City Offers Free Cleft Lip and Palate Surgeries in Partnership with NGOs

The City Government of Bago has joined forces with Operation New Face Philippines Inc. and Smile Train Philippines to provide free cleft lip and palate screening and surgeries to 100-130 patients from across the region. The 6-day surgical mission, themed "Ibalik ang Yuhom" (Bring Back the Smile), is taking place at Bago City Hospital from May 8-13, 2024.

Why this matters: The provision of free medical services to underprivileged communities can have a significant impact on public health and well-being. Moreover, initiatives like this can serve as a model for other local governments to prioritize healthcare and collaborate with NGOs to address pressing medical needs.

Patients from Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Iloilo, Cebu, and Bohol are eligible to participate in the program. Two surgeons and two anesthesiologists have been brought in to cater to the patients' needs. "We will continue to accept patients for screening until tomorrow, May 9, so those who want to avail of this surgical mission for free can still go here," said Exzel Isidro, President of Operation New Face Philippines Inc.

The Bago City Government has allocated funds to provide various health services, especially to Bagonhons, with the health of the people remaining a top priority of the administration. The city is providing facilities, food, accommodation, laboratories, and medicines for the surgical mission teams and patients.

Vice Mayor Ramon Torres emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, "This free surgical mission is a big help to our kasimanwas." The surgical mission is also being facilitated by the Go Bago Team and supported by the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental.

The 6-day free cleft lip and palate screening and surgical mission at Bago City Hospital aims to make a meaningful difference in the lives of 100-130 patients from across the region. With the support of Operation New Face Philippines Inc., Smile Train Philippines, and the local government, the initiative is set to bring back smiles to many faces.
