Torrential Floods Sweep Away Livestock in Al Ais, Saudi Arabia Amid Extreme Rains

Torrential floods have swept away livestock in the Al Ais region of Medina, Saudi Arabia, due to severe rainfall on April 29, 2024. The heavy rainfall and storms affected several parts of the kingdom, leading to warnings from authorities and disruptions to daily life.

The General Directorate of Civil Defense called for caution and urged people to stay away from areas where water collects and valleys, and not to swim in them, due to the danger of water flows. Thunderstorms are expected to continue in most regions of Saudi Arabia from Monday, April 29, until Friday, May 3.

Moderate to heavy rains accompanied by torrential downpours, hail, and high-speed winds are forecast for the Makkah Al-Mukarramah region, including the Holy Capital, Khulais, Al-Kamil, and other cities and governorates. The Jazan, Najran, Asir, Al-Baha, and Medina regions will also experience similar weather conditions.

The extreme weather led to the suspension of in-person classes at schools in Jeddah, Madinah, Rabigh and Khulais. Universities in the affected areas also postponed scheduled exams. The National Centre for Meteorology advised people to avoid unnecessary travel due to poor visibility, hail, and the risk of flash floods. Rainfall amounts of 10mm to 50mm are expected in some areas.
