Explosion Reported in Mykolaiv, Southern Ukraine Amid Russian Drone Attacks

An explosion was reported in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv on Sunday night, according to the Ukrainian news outlet 'Strana'. The blast occurred amid a wave of Russian drone and missile attacks targeting several regions of Ukraine.

Ukrainian air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 15 out of 16 Iranian-designed Shahed drones launched by Russia overnight. The drones were launched from occupied Crimea and Russia's Kursk Oblast, flying through Sumy and Cherkasy oblasts before approaching their targets. Russia also fired two Iskander-M ballistic missiles from the Belgorod region.

In Odesa, the crash of a downed drone caused damage to residential buildings, shops, and infrastructure facilities. Nine people, including four children, were injured in the attack. The children, aged under one, nine, and twelve, have been hospitalized along with three injured adults.

Mykolaiv Oblast was also targeted, with four Shahed drones destroyed by air defense forces in the region. Fragments of a downed drone damaged commercial infrastructure in Ochakiv, causing a fire that was quickly extinguished. One man was injured and received medical assistance, according to the head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration.

In Kyiv, multiple explosions were heard as air defense units successfully intercepted and destroyed all Shahed drones launched at the capital. No casualties or damage to residential or critical infrastructure were reported in Kyiv.

Why this matters: The latest Russian attacks demonstrate the ongoing threat to Ukrainian cities and civilians more than a year into the war. The use of Iranian-supplied drones has enabled Russia to sustain its campaign of strikes against Ukraine's critical infrastructure and residential areas, causing widespread damage and casualties.

The Ukrainian military stated that this was the latest in a series of attacks on Mykolaiv by Russian forces, which have included missile strikes and drone attacks since March 2023, resulting in multiple casualties and damage to infrastructure. "The enemy continues to terrorize the civilian population and critical infrastructure of Mykolaiv Oblast," said the head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration.
