AdventureSmart UK Launches Safety Campaign to Reduce Incidents in National Parks

AdventureSmart UK has launched a safety campaign aimed at reducing avoidable incidents in UK national parks and outdoor areas. The campaign focuses on promoting safety messages and encouraging preparation among outdoor enthusiasts.

Why this matters: The campaign's success can have a significant impact on reducing the burden on emergency services and minimizing the risk of fatalities in national parks. By promoting safety awareness, AdventureSmart UK can also contribute to a cultural shift towards more responsible and prepared outdoor recreation.

The launch comes amid a series of recent incidents in the Peak District National Park, where AdventureSmart UK is based. Between April 13 and May 12, 2024, the team responded to 14 incidents, involving a total of 174 team members.

Some of the notable incidents include two walkers becoming disoriented on Bamford Edge during bad weather on May 12, requiring a small group of team members to escort them to safety. On the same day, a fallen climber was reported in the Stoney Middleton Area, with the team quickly deploying to assess, treat, and carry the casualty back for further transportation to the hospital.

Other incidents involved a walker with a medical issue between Upper Booth and Jacobs Ladder in the Edale Valley on May 11, who was assessed and evacuated by stretcher to Upper Booth Farm before being handed over to the ambulance service. On the same day, two team members who were coincidentally climbing nearby responded quickly to a fallen climber on Burbage North, treating the casualty for a serious lower leg injury before evacuating them back to the road.

The AdventureSmart UK safety campaign aims to reduce the number of avoidable incidents by promoting key safety messages. These include being prepared for outdoor activities, checking the weather forecast, bringing necessary equipment and supplies, knowing what to do in an emergency, and dialing 999 and asking for the police, then mountain rescue, in case of an emergency.

By encouraging preparation and promoting safety messages, AdventureSmart UK hopes to reduce the number of avoidable incidents in UK national parks and outdoor areas. The campaign serves as a timely reminder for outdoor enthusiasts to prioritize safety and be well-prepared before embarking on their adventures in the great outdoors.
