Thieves Use Stolen Forklift to Steal ATM from UK Bank, Police Searching for Suspects

In a bold early morning heist on Tuesday, a group of thieves used a stolen forklift to rip an ATM from the wall of a Nationwide Building Society bank in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, about 30 miles north of London. Surveillance footage captured the daring theft, which occurred around 5:30 AM.

Video of the incident shows one hooded suspect repeatedly ramming the telehandler forklift into the side of the bank building to disconnect the cash machine. Accomplices then attached a rope to the ATM, allowing the heavy machinery to hoist it into the air and load it onto the back of a stolen white pickup truck.

After successfully extracting the ATM, the three male suspects fled the scene in the pickup, leaving the forklift behind. A neighbor who witnessed and filmed the theft said the entire operation took only about 90 seconds.

Why this matters: The use of heavy construction vehicles in ATM robberies has become a growing concern in the UK. In 2020, there were 365 attacks on cash machines reported, with losses in the millions of pounds. Banks are taking preventive measures such as removing ATMs from storefronts and installing security systems to tag stolen cash.

Hertfordshire Police are actively investigating the incident and appealing to the public for any CCTV, phone, or dashcam footage that could help identify the suspects and the stolen vehicles used in the theft. "Officers are working to establish the circumstances around this theft and to trace those responsible," a police spokesperson stated.
