Marathon Petroleum Recognized for Safety Improvements by National Private Trucking Council

Marathon Petroleum Corporation has been honored with Silver and Bronze Seal Awards from the National Private Trucking Council (NPTC) for its exceptional safety improvements in 2023. The awards, presented at the NPTC's annual Education Management Conference on May 10, 2024, recognize 15 of Marathon Petroleum's fleets for reducing vehicle accident rates by 20-40% at terminals in 14 US locations.

Why this matters: This recognition highlights the importance of prioritizing safety in the private trucking industry, which has a significant impact on public safety and the overall economy. By reducing accident rates, companies like Marathon Petroleum can help prevent injuries and fatalities, while also reducing costs associated with accidents and improving their bottom line.

The Silver Seal Award, which recognizes a 40% or greater reduction in accident frequency rate compared to the previous year, was awarded to Marathon Petroleum terminals in Argo, Illinois; Bay City/Flint, Michigan; El Paso, Texas; Garyville, Louisiana; Hammond, Indiana; Jackson, Michigan; Lansing, Michigan; Leach, Kentucky; Lexington, Kentucky; Mason, Texas; Midland, Pennsylvania; North Muskegon, Michigan; and Roosevelt, Utah. The Bronze Seal Award, given for a 20-39% reduction, was presented to terminals in Salt Lake City, Utah and Tucson, Arizona.

Jocko Langlois, Marathon Petroleum's Trucking & Rail - East Transport Operations Director, emphasized the company's commitment to safety, stating, "Our drivers spend a large percentage of their time on the road interacting with the public, so driving has continued to be one of our primary safety focus areas." He attributed the fleets' success in reducing accidents to the use of program tools like Smith Systems training, a fatigue policy, and in-cab safety features such as collision avoidance, blind spot notifications, and an onboard camera system for monitoring driving behavior.

This is not the first time Marathon Petroleum has been recognized by the NPTC for its safety record. In 2023, 13 of the company's fleets received similar Safety Seal Awards, demonstrating a consistent focus on improving safety year over year. The company's ongoing efforts to enhance safety protocols and practices have not only benefited its employees and the company itself but also the communities in which it operates.

Marathon Petroleum Corporation, a leading energy company in the United States, continues to prioritize safety improvements across its operations. The recognition from the National Private Trucking Council, a trade association promoting safety and efficiency in the private trucking industry, underscores the effectiveness of Marathon Petroleum's safety initiatives and its dedication to ensuring the well-being of its employees and the public.
