U.S. News Launches Ratings for Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers

U.S. News & World Report has unveiled its inaugural Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers ratings, recognizing 717 high-performing facilities across four specialties out of nearly 5,000 centers evaluated nationwide. The new ratings aim to provide patients with a data-driven tool to help them navigate their outpatient surgical care needs and make informed decisions.

Why this matters: This rating system has the potential to significantly impact the healthcare industry by promoting transparency and accountability among ambulatory surgery centers, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, this tool will empower patients to make informed decisions about their care, potentially reducing complications and improving overallhealth outcomes.

The Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers ratings assess facilities in four specialty areas: Colonoscopy & Endoscopy, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics & Spine, and Urology. The analysis is based on objective, risk-adjusted measures of patient outcomes, including complication rates, emergency room visits, unplanned hospitalizations, and other undesirable outcomes. Patient factors such as pre-existing conditions are accounted for to ensure fair comparisons among surgery centers.

Fewer than 15% of the evaluated ambulatory surgery centers earned a "High Performing" rating. The top 10 states with the greatest number of high-performing centers are Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. California leads the nation with 96 top-rated facilities, followed by Florida with 60 and Texas with 50.

"Same-day procedures play an increasingly prominent role in health care as an alternative to overnight hospital care," said Ben Harder, Chief of Health Analysis and Managing Editor at U.S. News. "Building on our 34 years of experience evaluating Best Hospitals, we're proud to give patients this new, free, data-driven tool to help them navigate their health care needs."
